After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
 
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.
 
We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

This publication is part of the Community Development Project by Soul City, located in South Africa. It provides information about what HIV and AIDS are, methods or treatment and prevention, and facts for people who are interested in learning more about the disease. Many pictures are used and multiple translations of key words are included on every page. Key messages are highlighted and the format is meant to be culturally appropriate for a South African audience.

This booklet is designed for use by the community and in the home - by parents, adults, youth, teachers, health and community workers. Topics covered include, what is AIDS and how do you get it, how do you test for AIDS, AIDS and relationships, prevention of AIDS, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), why is AIDS spreading so fast, children with AIDS, physical signs of AIDS, care and support services for people with AIDS and wrong ideas about AIDS.
