Health action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Art Against AIDS / Art Anti AIDS

The 5-year programme Art Against AIDS was established in 1997 by the SALUS Foundation. This project was based on the forming of competitions to solicit art focused on issues related to HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and the stigma associated with these diseases. The art produced within these competitions was then used to produce printed materials to be displayed in public areas and social establishments. The project underwent a name change in what appears to be 2002, from "Art Against AIDS" to "Art Anti AIDS".
Communication Strategies
The Art Against AIDS programme began with the competition of non-professional works - posters, emblems and announcements for radio programmes adressing AIDS and STDs. The winning works were used in a poster campaign on the theme of STDs and HIV prevention. This initial project was continued in November 1998 with a sculpture competition entitled "Youth Against AIDS", in 1999 with a competition of video scripts, decorative ceramic and paintings, called "Ukraine and AIDS: Crossroad of millenniums". In 2000 and 2001, the project focused on fashion and textiles as forms for expression. In 2002, "Body Art Anti-AIDS" was the theme and title of the competition, with a focus on the human body as a canvas to visualise the issues, and a purpose of activating understanding concerning HIV prevention in Ukraine and popularising the new informational telephone hotline "AIDS INFORM". The 2003 "Theatrical Presentation of Anti-AIDS Suites" included 3-minute performances that were then filmed and presented at the XIII International AIDS Conference in Bangkok in 2004. A pantomime and photo AIDS event was held in December of 2005, including a presentation of 7 pantomime performances and 20 photos.

Some of the other printed materials that have resulted from this project are additional posters, beer pads (to protect bar-tops from moisture stains), and yearly calendars.
