Health action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Summary

As announced in Butuan City, Philippines, the Avian Influenza Task Force (AITF), which is being spearheaded by the Philippine Department of Agriculture (DA), has conducted an information caravan in Siargao, an island on the east side of the archipelago, to increase awareness among the participants on the different strategies needed to prevent and control avian influenza. The caravan was scheduled for three days in early March 2008 for the purpose of reaching a participant group, composed of local chief executives, vice mayors, Sangguniang Bayan members, and chiefs of office.

Through an orientation and the dissemination of recent updates on avian influenza, the caravan is intended to provide information on the prevention measures that are being implemented by the DA, particularly the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI). A further purpose is to develop the participants' capability to respond to a suspected avian influenza outbreak. Currently (March 2008), avian flu has not reached the Philippines. However, precautions are being implemented because of the continuing outbreaks in the neighbouring countries and their affects on the poultry industry. According to this article, although the country remains avian influenza-free, the threat of an incursion of the disease remains imminent.
