Health action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Ayrton Senna Institute

The Ayrton Senna Institute is a non-governmental organisation (NGO) with headquarters in São Paulo, Brazil, that works to provide adequate conditions for human development to children and youth. Its mission, based on Ayrton Senna's life and ideals, aims at "contributing to the creation of conditions and opportunities so that all Brazilian children and young people can fully develop their potential as persons, citizens and future professionals."

The Institute functions primarily as a funding institution, and not as an implementing organisation, but has several advocacy strategies of its own.
Communication Strategies
To carry out its objectives, the Institute develops work around two strategic axes: "Doing" and "Inspiring". The first, "Doing", provides development opportunities directly to children and young people through its Social Technologies Center. The second, "Inspiring", which works through the Communication Center for Human Development, carries out actions that stimulate other social players to make a commitment of responsibility to the development of future generations.

Doing Programmes:
  • Connect Yourself: works to address illiteracy in primary schools.
  • Accelerate Brazil: works to correct the learning flow in public elementary schools (1st to 4th grades), helping children that had failed in school at least two years to know what they need to enter the grade level corresponding to their age.
  • Champion Circuit: works to develop, along with public schools, initiatives that transform and invigorate public education, by implementing, systematising and disseminating methodologies for strengthening the management of municipal departments of education and the elementary schools themselves. This project applies management methodologies of the programmes Connect Yourself - teaching how to read and write, and Accelerate Brazil - learning acceleration, in schools, municipal and state education bureaus. The strategy works to guarantee students' stay and success in their school course.
  • Education Through Art: in partnership with NGOs, works to promote educational opportunities through a variety of artistic expressions, developing the personal, social, cognitive and productive potential of children and young people.
  • Education Through Sports: based on sports activities, works to promote the social and personal development of the children and young people socially.
  • Young Superaction: in public schools, young people join educators to create and implement projects that propose solutions for the social problems of their communities, thus developing autonomy, solidarity and civic competence.
  • Your School at 2000 per Hour: works to use technology creatively in public schools. This programme is intended to reorganise the school community, restructure the curriculum to develop competences and abilities, stimulate teachers to become facilitators of student success, and implement interactive learning methodologies and management.
  • Toy Libraries: In cancer hospitals and NGOs, this programme implements toy libraries that are prepared to receive children, young people and their families with activities that aid in complying with the treatment programme.
Inspiring Programmes:
  • Ayrton Senna Grand Prix of Journalism: works to encourage and recognise outstanding coverage of the social issues concerning the children and young people.
  • Network of Justice: through an alliance with the Brazilian Association of Judges and Public Prosecutors for Children and Youth (ABMP), promotes the effective application of the By-Laws for Children and Adolescents and of the Doctrine of the Integral Protection of Children and Youth.
  • Publications: a series of publications, as well as books from the Ayrton Senna Collection are available to people and organisations working in support of the children and youth of Brazil.
  • Alliance with ANDI (News Agency for Children's Rights): works to monitor the coverage of children's and young people's issues in the main print media of Brazil - recording and analysing them in several publications.
