Bulgaria WASH Radio Campaign

Created by the Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council (WSSCC), this campaign was broadcast on Bulgarian National Radio (BNR) with a weekly one-hour water supply, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) radio programme from August to November 2010. The nationwide WASH Radio Campaign presented various WASH topics and interviewed sector stakeholders in the interest of improving sanitation and water quality in Bulgaria.
This nationwide campaign used the medium of radio in an effort to: raise awareness about the importance of improved sanitation and hygiene for human health; reinforce and streamline the execution of various WASH projects in the country; facilitate national debates for the future development of the WASH sector in Bulgaria; inform the public about relevant topics and concepts in the WASH sector; and inform the public that economic development in rural areas is linked to improving the quality of sanitation infrastructure in the country.
Broadcast on Fridays from 16:00 to 17:00, each programme focused on a different topic and geographic region, and comprised WASH jingles, interviews with members of the public, news, and quizzes, as well as discussions with various stakeholders from the water and sanitation sector. The sector stakeholders highlighted problems, efforts, and successes that helped them to understand each other's capacities and concerns better, and build trust.

According to WSSCC's National Coordinator for Bulgaria and President of the non-governmental organisation (NGO) Earth Forever, the WASH Radio Campaign "encouraged citizens to speak about toilets, bad hygiene, health concerns linked to poor water quality and hygienic practices - topics that were not openly shared and discussed before in the national media."
