Health action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Club NTG - Zambia

The radio show Club NTG (New Teen Generation) targets youth ages 13-23 and combines various peer education tactics to re-inforce HIV/AIDS and STD prevention messages. The show addresses reproductive health issues relevant to Zambia's younger generation. The unique format integrates the best of both interpersonal and mass media interventions. The show is interspersed with popular music, show biz news and contests.
Communication Strategies

An hour-long weekly show airing on three radio stations throughout Zambia. The public were involved by viewing and participating in the recording of the sound bites. NTG clubs were formed in many schools and outside of Lusaka. Listeners were encouraged to write in or call in.
Development Issues

Reproductive health issues, including teen pregnancy, sexuality, dating, HIV/AIDS, condom use.
Key Points

The impact and reach of the show were increased by the presenters visiting schools and other public places to do promotions and record sound bites which are then used on the show. DJ's are frequently asked to serve as presenters at youth functions and discos.
