Health action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Community Works - USA

Community Works is a subsidiary of the DELTA Project of the Tides Center that serves as a source of information, expertise, access and technical assistance to communities that have undertaken the complex process of addressing, at the local level, the difficult social problems they face.
Communication Strategies

Many ‘Help Desks' were established, each containing a small team of experts in a specific problem area to provide information, access and technical assistance for the development of integrated strategies for addressing complex social problems.
Development Issues

Local development, poverty, education and job training, health and human services, environment, economic development, housing and neighborhood development and crime and public safety.
Key Points

Community Works begins work at the request of the communities. They provide information on the efforts of other communities throughout the country that address specific types of social problems. They also provide access to those people who were instrumental in the conception and implementation of those programs. Finally, technical assistance is provided in the form of helping development and implementation of similar initiatives designed for and by the requesting community.
