Health action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText

This social and behaviour change communication (SBCC) digital library of both print and audio-visual materials was developed by the Information, Education, and Motivation (IEM) Unit of the Directorate General of Family Planning (DGFP) of Bangladesh. It includes, as of its online unveiling, 10 years of IEM's materials. (Over time, all previous materials will be included.)

Bangladesh Knowledge Management Initiative (BKMI) provided technical assistance (TA) to develop this SBCC archive.

These materials can be accessed online from any part of the world as a result of a shift from manual documentation to digitisation. According to the Bangladesh Center for Communication Programmes, "BKMI is also providing TA to Bureau of Health Education (BHE) and Institute of Public Health Nutrition (IPHN) of Director General of Health Services in developing similar archive in their respective units as part of its initiatives to enhance SBCC and Knowledge Management (KM) capacity of MoHFW [Ministry of Health and Family Welfare]." BKMI is a three-year United States Agency of International Development (USAID)-funded project under the global Health Communication Capacity Collaborative (HC3) and jointly implemented by Johns Hopkins Center for Communication Programs and Bangladesh Center for Communication Programs (BCCP). A sampling of their outputs includes: online and offline (Windows & Android) versions of eToolkit for Field Workers; eToolkit for Program Managers and Planners; eLearning Courses in Bangla for Field Workers; eLearning Courses on ‘Message and Material Development’ and Monitoring and Evaluation’ for programme managers and planners (development is going on), and digital archives of IEM unit, BHE, and IPHN.

In the online archive, entries are freely available through a search by title, author, date issued, or subject. Subjects include: "FP [family planning] Services, ASRH [adolescent sexual and reproductive health]; General FP; Population; Safe Motherhood; LAPM [long acting and permanent methods of birth control]; and MCH [mother and child health]".

Audio visual materials are TV spots, drama, song, Natak (music drama), programme aids, etc. The print section includes flip charts, posters, booklets, leaflets, etc. Samples from the archived materials include:

  • videos posted on YouTube, such as the one below posted on April 28 2015 "TV Spot on Child Marriage": "This TV Spot describes the negative consequences of child marriage aiming to create awareness among the community gate keepers in general and potential victims of child marriage in particular."
  • audio radio jingles like the one linked here on LAPM of FP and birth control.
