Health action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Summary

This article details local efforts to help prevent the spread of avian influenza in Indonesia. At the Primajasa bus terminal in East Jakarta, when people were traveling to their hometowns during Idul Fitri, a Muslim holiday that marks the end of Ramadan - the month of fasting, campaigners were urging people to inform their families and people in their hometowns about avian influenza.

According to the article, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) funded Community-Based Avian Influenza Control (CBAIC) project provided 21,000 seat covers with quizzes about bird flu on them to the bus operator, Primajasa. The seat covers included tips about preventing the spread of bird flu and included pictures about the importance of wearing masks and gloves when handling sick poultry. Primajasa operates 215 busses, and was expected to transport approximately 33,000 holidaymakers during the Idul Fitri period.
