Health action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText

"Deployment of the most appropriate insecticide based vector control interventions including nets and IRS [indoor residual spraying] needs to be informed by up-to-date data on insecticide resistance in the malaria vector species...." - Dr. Nabie Bayoh

This online mapping tool is designed to track insecticide resistance in mosquitoes that cause malaria. The interactive website identifies locations in more than 50 malaria-endemic countries where mosquitoes have developed resistance to the insecticides used in bed nets and indoor residual sprays. IR Mapper incorporates the World Health Organization (WHO) revised criteria for reporting insecticide resistance, designed to detect resistance earlier. By aggregating information, the IR Mapper is intended to help direct which vector control tools should be deployed in areas of high resistance.

IR Mapper consolidates published data on insecticide susceptibility and resistance mechanisms from 1954 to the present. Users can view published data, overlay one's own data, print maps, and change map views based upon map menus for such possibilities, for example, as vector species, insecticide classes, resistance mechanisms.
