Jóvenes Latinoamerican@s Unid@s en Respuesta al VIH y SIDA (JLU) - Latin American Youth United In Response to HIVand AIDS

JLU works with youth organisations and organisations that work on their behalf under the premise that these are the areas where JLU will be most likely to come in contact with young people and their day to day reality. JLU uses new technologies to work in a network through their website, for reasons described on the website as:

• When they are in permanent touch and communication, young people are motivated to continue the work.
• It motivates other young people in the community who are not yet organised to organise around common objectives.
• It favours recognition among young people.
• It permits sharing experiences and learning from each other, becoming familiar with new strategies to reach young people and thereby providing young men and women with more information.
• Through the network, youth organising is strengthened and public officials become aware of what young people are capable of achieving.
• It favours teamwork between organisations, public officials, and youth. 
• It is a space in which young people can really give their opinions about themes that directly involve them.

In addition to websites in each country, one of JLU's activities is to draft a survey of the organisations that work with youth in the region. The purpose is so that organisations, governments, and agencies that wish to contact youth organisations, as well as those that work with young people to coordinate local, national, and regional activities, can actually manage to promote sexual and reproductive rights to young men and women and generate preventative actions, attention, and support related to HIV/AIDS among this population.

HIV/AIDS, Youth

The issues JLU members demand of governments, organisations, and funding agencies include:

• that youth participation in HIV/AIDS dialogue and action arenas be strengthened and guaranteed, converting them into plural and inclusive spaces where young people can make a significant impact on health and education policy.
• that youth be guaranteed participation under the same conditions as other stakeholders in all decision-making arenas.
• that young people be given equitable and free access to confidential and high-quality sexual-, reproductive-, and HIV/AIDS-related healthcare. 
• that actions and policies be generated that allow for free access to integral, secular information and sex education that is based on scientific evidence, as well as access to information about all prevention methods.
• that support actions be directed at valuing actions undertaken by young people, recognising their need to contribute to the response to HIV/AIDS, and fostering and strengthening organised youth participation.
• that technical, material, and financial support be available for the development and strengthening of youth activism.
