After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
 
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.
 
We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

'Karnival Riben Merah' - Malaysia

This project of the Malaysian AIDS Foundation began in 1994 in Kuala Lumpur, and has occurred every year since. The "Red Ribbon Carnival" is an entertainment event that is saturated with HIV/AIDS messages. Support, compassion and awareness of HIV/AIDS towards the people who live with it are hoped to be raised by the efforts of this event.
Communication Strategies

This day long event combines educational messages with sporting, cultural, and entertaining events. In 1997 the event was enhanced with a Walk of Hope procession and the Konsert Riben Merah and a youth programme entitled "Hip Hitz Jam".

Key Points

Families and friends are educated through this experience, resulting in overall decreases in stigma towards people living with HIV/AIDS. The mission of the Malaysian AIDS Foundation is to create an environment free from the negative impact of AIDS, and this event works directly to this end.
