Health action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Loans Amply Repaid - Mozambique

A refugee resettlement programme supported by HelpAge International where small loans offered to elderly participants launched them into new jobs & increased their self-esteem.
Communication Strategies
A system of training & interpersonal communication is set up for 11 committees which enabled them to advise loan recipients. There was a great interchange of experiences & ideas between the different committees. In Tete district "the project allowed older & younger people to set up small enterprises together", bridging generations.

Key Points
The loan system was supervised by an elected committee from the local village. Committee members received training who then advised the loan recipients who chose their own business propositions, such as brewing & blacksmithing. An initial donation of $5,000 from a "charitable source" started the process. "The age care group interviewed unemployed older persons (none of whom were eligible for pensions) & discussed initiatives from shoe repairing in street kiosks, through vegetable sales, to market gardening. Interest was set at 2% repayment, starting at the end of the first month; would last normally for twelve months, the repaid cash then being made available for further loans". After 2 years the agency had received repayment of all loans except one whose member had died, leaving no family. Similar programmes were initiated in Peru & the Philippines.
