Health action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Manuel Velasco Suárez Award for Excellence in Bioethics

The Manuel Velasco Suarez Award for Excellence in Bioethics was created in 2002 to stimulate young scholars in the development of their capacities for bioethical analysis. It is one of six awards presented by the Pan American Health and Education Foundation (PAHEF) through its Awards for Excellence in Inter-American Public Health Program, a partnership between the Foundation and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). According to PAHEF, bioethics principles seek to humanise and mediate the headlong advance of science, technology, and global development based on the interaction and dialogue between experts and lay people.

To stimulate young scholars in the development of their capacities for bioethical analysis, the Secretary of Health in Mexico and PAHEF in cooperation with PAHO created this award to honour Dr. Manuel Velasco Suárez. The awardee receives a medal from the Velasco Suárez family, a research grant of up to US$10,000 to perform the scholarly activities outlined in the project proposal, a certificate of honour, and a paid trip to Washington, DC, United States to receive the award at the annual PAHO/PAHEF Awards for Excellence in Inter-American Public Health Event and is recognised before the ministers of health of the region at the PAHO Directing Council Meeting.
