Health action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Medical Forum - Nigeria

The Nigerian Medical Forum (NMF) seeks to relieve sickness and preserve public health in Nigeria through a UK, voluntary based charity by providing medical and dental health information materials and other health equipment and facilities to Nigerian health care providers.
Communication Strategies

Donated journals and equipment are transported to places of great need in Nigeria. Fundraising and awareness raising events have taken place. Supply copies of acclaimed manuals to medical libraries and compiled booklets related to accident care and distributed them to government and health institutions.

Key Points

The economic crisis in sub-Saharan Africa in the 1980s raised the cost of health information materials well out of the reach of the doctors in the region, effectively cutting them off from any new developments in the medical field. For this reason, a partnership was formed to provide a West African version of medical journals at affordable costs in local currency. The NMF is committed to a non-political and not-for profit agenda, simply seeking to improve access to health information in other parts of the developing world.
