Health action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Summary

Moving Forward is a document published by Pathfinder International to provide an overview and examples of the organisation is doing to develop and support HIV and AIDS work globally leveraging their background in community-based, sexual and reproductive health, and gender-focused programming.  Eight priority areas are described in this paper along with specific examples of projects addressing those topics and relevant publications.

These priority areas are:

  • Coordinating Comprehensive Services through Community Home-Based Care
  • Expanding, Improving, and Leveraging HIV Counseling and Testing
  • Linking Facility and Community Services for Treatment and Adherence Support
  • Integrating Family Planning and HIV and AIDS Services to Address Clients’ Reproductive goals
  • Packaging Prevention of Mother-to-Child HIV Transmission Services for Mothers, Infants, and Families
  • Targeting Youth to Expand Access and Improve Quality of Services
  • Engaging and Supporting Vulnerable groups
  • Mobilizing Multisectoral Approaches for orphans and Vulnerable Children

Several common communication-related themes arise within these areas of focus.

These efforts include caregiver training, including treatment adherence support, and community mobilisation for stigma reduction and HIV prevention. Additional efforts described include policy development support, family planning and support groups, integration of counseling and testing in antenatal care, maternal and child health, family planning, prevention of mother-to-child transmission, in- and out-patient care, and youth-friendly services.

Vulnerable groups, from "high-risk" populations to children, are identified as requiring special care as well, and projects are described as being designed to address those needs through further trainings, capacity building, and advocacy programmes.
