Health action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Moving the World, Voices of Justice - Mexico

The Mexican feminist organisation Comunicación Intercambio y Desarrollo Humano en América Latina (CIDHAL A.C.) has launched a radio programme called Moviendo al Mundo, Voces de Equidad (Moving the World, Voices of Justice). Transmitted throughout 33 municipalities in the state of Morelos, Mexico, as well as some areas of the state of Guerrero, the radio show is designed to provide a pluralistic, democratic space from which to advocate for a gender-focussed culture. Specific programme goals include using and making visible the women's movement's international, national, and state agenda and incorporating men into women's themes.
Communication Strategies
Broadcast weekly on a public radio station in Morelos, the radio show addresses issues related to discrimination and inequality that characterise the current situation in which Mexican women live. The show is divided into the following sections:
  • In-consciousness: Provides news related to sexual and reproductive health, gender violence, and civic participation
  • Women and power: Encourages women to exercise their right to vote and to seek positions of power
  • The interview: Features discussion with specialists, decision makers, activists, etc.
  • Recommendation of the week: Offers literature or audio/video recommendations from CIDHAL's Betsie Hollants Documentation Center.
Development Issues
Women, Gender, Rights, Conflict, Political Development, Sexual and Reproductive Health.
Key Points
Organisers note that the government in Morelos is right-wing. Thus, it has been NGOs that have worked on behalf of women in this state. For this reason, the spaces to push for a gender focus in public policy are very limited in communications media. What has been lacking, they say, is a space to encourage cultural transformation to the end of permitting women to live fully as human beings.

Established in 1969, CIDHAL is a non-profit feminist NGO dedicated to providing educational alternatives and services that empower women and foster active citizen participation. Its mission is to contribute to the development of a society that is equitable in terms of both gender and social class, and in harmony with the natural environment.
