Peer Support HIV/AIDS - China
A communication program which involves young people in China supporting each other to address the dangers of HIV/AIDS. 120 million children between the ages of 12 and 17 in China need to know how HIV is transmitted and avoided. The work is based around peer support processes. Other activities include improving hospital based care, increasing testing for people engaging in high risk activities and education programmes for cross-border truck drivers.
Communication Strategies
Training is being provided for youth by youth including use of condoms, modes of transmission, and the true dangers of HIV/AIDS. Peer education is relied on as a method for transmission of the knowledge as sexual matters are considered taboo and no formal education is provided for young people through families or school.

China government and health officials are just realizing the enormity of the HIV/AIDS problem in China. This peer-to-peer programme is an attempt to provide a communication framework that supports young people address the serious issues they must face which might not be familiar to their parents.
