Health action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
 
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.
 
We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

All India Radio Bhopal broadcast a one hour entertainment/education AIDS programme for truck drivers from July 1998 until January 1999.
Communication Strategies

The programme was broadcast between 11pm and midnight from 19 radio stations in the state. Consisted of 5 parts: 1) Hook truck drivers to the broadcast using Hindi film songs which had been suggested by them. 2) Broadcast messages on AIDS in between programmes 3) Interview truck drivers at roadside restaurants about sexual habits - broadcast with interviews with medical community about answers to same. 4) Broadcast live interviews using mobile phones, advise use of condoms. 5) Introduce programmes to families of truck drivers - broadcast their concerns.

Key Points

Hooking the truck drivers to the programme with the use of popular Hindi film songs was key to the success of this programme. Programme was discontinued due to cost of mobile phones, logistic problems and lack of training a large number of broadcasters.
