Health action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

'Re-Integration' of Families - Greece

A monitored programme which invites a lone elderly person into a new family with the intention that the family willeventually 'adopt' the ageing person on a permanent basis.
Communication Strategies
With community participation & interpersonal communication, the programme carefully matches the culture, religion, interests & attitudes of an ageing person with a family, in the hopes that new bonds of friendship & support will develop. The Open Care Centre is part of the support to the 'adoption' programme & took on the responsibility of educating the public on ageing issues, hoping to improve negative social attitudes.

Key Points
The 'adoption' programme is an attempt to stop the disintegration of the traditional extended family, which "has produced grave problems for elderly persons in many countries". A trained social worker ensures a smooth transition, supporting both the family & the new elderly member in the new arrangement. External medical support is also made available to the family. A solid support system is required to ensure the success of the programme. Summer Camps & Holiday Spas are offered to the ageing which give other family members a respite period. A 2-tiered system of Open Care Centres (Day Centres) & Home Care Assistance also exists. Volunteers are an integral part of the programme to aid the families at home, as is "a coordinating role among various agencies". The programme serves to meet the emotional needs of the elderly who miss family interaction & 'adopting' families are enriched with the wisdom & friendship of an ageing community member.
