Developed by MTV and The Swedish International Development Agency (Sida), the film Transit aims to use fiction to deliver HIV/AIDS prevention messages and encourage dialogue about safe sex among young people. The movie is supported by a teaching kit designed for teachers, peer educators, youth leaders, and others working with young people ages 15-25.
"The two-hour film, shot on location in St. Petersburg, Mexico City, Nairobi and Los Angeles, and follows 4 main characters on a journey across four continents that finds them exploring emotion and sexuality in a candid and gripping way. Tatjana dreams of escaping St Petersburg. She thinks she has found a man that can take her away. In Mexico City, Champinon struggles to find himself a girlfriend under the shadow of his confident, good-looking best friend, Blanco. In Los Angeles, Asha discovers that Vip, the man of her dreams, has been cheating on her. In Kenya, Matthew finds inspiration and enlightenment by diving into Nairobi’s burgeoning hip-hop culture." Transit is available rights free and at no cost to any broadcaster, school, community and not-for-profit organisation and is available in 10 languages, including, English, Spanish, Russian, French and Portugese.
The Transit Teaching Kit was created to be used with the film Transit to help further explore the issues raised and how they relate to young people's lives. It is intended to address basic HIV and AIDS education, decision-making and consequences, negotiating difficult situations, and risk behaviours. This kit contains materials that are designed to help engage young people in dialogue about the issues affecting them. The kit aims to encourage discussions that will raise awareness about HIV and encourage the empowerment of individuals' decision-making. The lesson plans in the kit have been designed to be easy to use and informative, without requiring experienced teachers, to be used in either classroom or non-classroom settings, in resource rich and resource poor environments. The first section is a facilitator overview that provides information on how to use the kit. The kit consists of 8 workshops each running 30-60 minutes. The kit also contains supplementary handouts, information and Question and Answers’s specifically for the facilitator.
