Health action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

UN Hails Asian Transparency Over Bird Flu

Summary

According to top United Nations' officials quoted in this article, there are heightened levels of transparency in Asian countries over cases of avian influenza, however, more is needed to prepare for a possible pandemic. Indonesia and China, both countries where communication and sharing of information has been challenging in the past, were cited as being particularly forthcoming in terms of current information flow and building infrastructure to ensure future reliable flow of information.

"To have information promptly is the ultimate goal," said David Nabarro, the UN's senior system coordinator for avian and human influenza.

According to Nabarro, avian influenza is "entrenched" in the poultry populations of at least six countries - Indonesia, parts of northern Egypt, Nigeria, Bangladesh, China and Vietnam.

Nabarro stressed that all countries in both the developed and developing world need to step up their efforts to cope with a possible H5N1 pandemic amongst humans.
