Health action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
 
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.
 
We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Radio Health - Cote D’Ivoire

A radio media programme which was used to engage people on health issues. It provides health information on issues such as sexual health and nutrition, highlights ways to deal with key health problems and facilitates peer support for positive attitude and behavioral change.
Communication Strategies

The focus is a popular radio programme broadcast nationally on Radio Cote D'Ivoire. It reflects the community perspective through being broadcast live from a village. A central feature of the programme is engagement of local community people in interviews, games on health themes, debates and reports on local activities. The programme was broadcast weekly for 10 weeks each year. Potential host villages are assessed and researched to determine the best type of programming and entertainment for their setting. On the morning of the broadcast a village workshop is held on the health theme. The radio programme takes place in the afternoon.

Key Points

This programme blends partnership with a mainstream broadcasting organisation; high quality popular entertainment; health information; community involvement - through both the setting of the programme in a village and the identification this promotes in villages throughout the country; and promotion of debate on health issues and appropriate responses.
