Health action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
 
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.
 
We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

In early December 1999 on Isle de Margarita, The Health Communication Unit of The Pan American Health Organisation in collaboration with the Programme for the Prevention and Control of Tobacco convened the 1st Regional Workshop on Management, Media Advocacy and Health Communication for the Prevention and Control of Tobacco. The journalists and communicators attending formed the Association of Pan American Journalists and Communicators in Health
Communication Strategies

The Association was formed to: develop and support creative and innovative national and regional interventions and strategies and to formulate communication plans for the prevention and control of tobacco; organise journalists and communicators specialised in tobacco prevention and control and support their training and continuing education.

Key Points

Some goals of the Association are: 1) To develop research to bring to light diverse national and regional situations that exist in areas as specific as tobacco consumption in each country and, in particular, strategies used to promote consumption in different scenarios as well as in the mass media and other media spaces, 2) To prepare a document with the core content of tobacco prevention and control that includes strategic topics, international experiences, as well as debatable points and controversy related to tobacco consumption, 3) To create an interactive web site for journalists, on tobacco use, in English, Spanish and Portuguese, 4) To prepare a manual on Working with the Mass Media and Media Advocacy on different topics, incorporating experiences from the region.
