Health action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText

This video series on childbirth - brief, live action videos - is designed by the Global Health Media Project to improve the quality of care during childbirth and protect the lives of birthing women. The videos showcase a "midwifery approach to care with a birth attendant working solo, the norm in small facilities throughout much of the developing world."

According to the project, the videos show practices surrounding normal birth that "demonstrate best-practice care during labor, birth, and immediate postpartum."

Videos are available in downloadable versions for laptops, tablets, and mobile phones, after a registration process on the Global Health Media Project website.

Among the available titles are the following:

  1. The Birth - Labor, Delivery & Early Postpartum
  2. The Vaginal Exam in Labor
  3. Preventing Infection at Birth
  4. The Position of the Baby
  5. Preparing the Birth Room
  6. Giving Good Care During Labor
  7. Initial Assessment in Labor
  8. Managing the Second Stage of Labor
  9. Managing the Third Stage of Labor
  10. Birthing the Baby
  11. Immediate Care After Birth
  12. Examining the Placenta

For example, this film shows ways to help a labouring woman and contribute to a feeling of trust.
