Control of Blindness - India
This is a Danida supported project for the control of blindness in India targeting patients with cataract and reduced vision. The project is based on communication, education and the involvement of local people.
Communication Strategies
This programme uses a new strategy involving improved communication about cataract and the possibilities for treatment through door-to-door identification of cataract patients. It has established permanent operating rooms in good locations, and maintains consistent and accurate information given by doctors. The current strategy involves “Information, Education, and Communication” (IEC) Committees which are designed to develop and test a selection of communications methods with different target groups.
Development Issues
Gender, children, education, health, rights, women.
Key Points
The programme focuses especially on women and people from poor areas, targeting people with incorrect or inadequate information. It places a great deal of emphasis on direct human interference in local communities. Mass media is not as useful in India because the majority of the population does not own a television.
