Health action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
 
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.
 
We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Communication and Development Studies, Ohio UniversityOffered in the United States (US), this Master's degree programme "emphasizes the use of communication to promote positive social change....The 'Comm Dev' curriculum encompasses core courses that emphasize topics and proficiencies in areas that include Communication and Social Change; Development Theory; Communication Theory; Participatory Research Methods; and Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E)....[S]tudents have specialized in areas that include, among others, health communication, participatory video, the digital divide, gender and development, conflict resolution, and the political economy of media. Developing Radio Partners (DRP)DRP is a US-based, non-profit, solutions-oriented media development organiation committed to building "vibrant, participatory communities internationally through the development of financially and editorially independent media services", with a focus on community radio. "Country by country, we build the capacity of individual radio stations, associations and programming networks by working alongside station managers, their staff and their communities" to bring information to those hardest to reach on development topics such as population, climate change, health, and governance.

  • 4. Doug Ward"Doug Ward's passion for radio was stoked by listening to crystal sets in the 1940s, then helping design CBC's As It Happens in the 70's, and now working with rural African broadcasters to give voice to small-scale farmers. He is Chair of the Board of Farm Radio International."

  • 5. Early Childhood Development Virtual University, University of VictoriaECDVU offers a "multi-faceted approach to addressing Early Childhood Development (ECD) leadership needs in the Majority World. It is a unique training and capacity building programme using distributed learning methods including the internet, CD-ROM and face-to-face seminars, and is a programme of the School of Child and Youth Care at the University of Victoria."

  • 6. Equal Access InternationalEqual Access is an international non-profit organisation creating interactive media and community mobilisation programmes designed to inform, educate, and inspire locally driven, lasting positive social change in thematic areas including: empowerment of women and girls and ending violence against them; youth life skills and livelihoods; civic engagement and peacebuilding; human rights; agriculture and economic development; and early childhood education. In 2016, Equal Access is launching a new peacebuilding programme in Cameroon.

Globalization and Development Communication, MS / Temple University's School of Media and CommunicationTemple University's Master of Science in Globalization and Development Communication (GDC) covers the goals, issues, and practices of development communication. While the GDC programme includes training in research skills and theory, it emphasises effective action and involves a practicum capstone experience. Offered in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, US, the programme prepares students with the knowledge and skills required to address challenges in areas such as public health, environmental sustainability, human rights and others.

Health Communication Resources (HCR)HCR is an international not-for-profit "specialising in training grass roots community practitioners to utilise the power of community radio for positive social change. HCR's mission is to 'equip communities and partners with the skills and resources to support community transformation and well-being through community-centred radio programming'....HCR provides support at all stages of the project cycle from project development to implementation to monitoring and evaluation."

  • 9. iMedia AssociatesUnited Kingdom (UK)-based international media development and communications company iMedia works with "rapidly converging media to tackle communications challenges presented by conflict, fragile governance and poverty." iMedia works with donors, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), mobile phone companies, and broadcasters in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. For example, in Ethiopia and Zambia, iMedia is building capacity of local teams to write and produce long-running radio dramas for social and behavioural change.

  • 10. International Development Research Centre (IDRC)"A key part of Canada's foreign policy efforts, IDRC supports research in developing countries to promote growth and development."

InternewsHaving worked in over 90 countries since its formation in 1982, Internews "is an international non-profit organization whose mission is to empower local media worldwide to give people the news and information they need, the ability to connect and the means to make their voices heard....Internews trains both media professionals and citizen journalists, introduces innovative media solutions, increases coverage of vital issues and helps establish policies needed for open access to information."

  • 12. Shayna Plaut, Ph.D.Dr. Plaut is the Simons Postdoctoral Research Fellow in International Law and Human Security at the School for International Studies in Simon Fraser University. Her work focuses on human rights and journalism and journalism education with a specific focus on people who do not fit well into the traditional understanding of the nation state.

  • 13. Shirley Ann Sullivan Educational Foundation (SASEF)SASEF's mission is to "provide education to children and youth throughout the world. Through continued research of educational programs, we identify and implement solutions impacting the development of children and youth." SASEF created The V Sign to equip children and youth with a real self-protection tool in the event they are being trafficked or stolen.

Strategies for Hope Trust"The Strategies for Hope (SFH) Trust produces books, films, and training manuals on community-based approaches to HIV prevention, care and support, especially in sub-Saharan Africa....They include, for example, the film 'What can I do?' and the 'Called to Care' toolkit, which are designed particularly for use by faith-based organisations but are also used by many secular NGOs and community groups. They also include the 'Stepping Stones' training package, including the 'Stepping Stones PLUS' manual..."

  • 15. The Healthy Aboriginal Network"The Healthy Aboriginal Network creates comic books on health and social issues for youth. Their work is innovative in that they create rough animations to focus group test their draft stories on YouTube with youth and professionals."

  • 16. The Manoff GroupThe mission of The Manoff Group is to "help families improve their wellbeing by using their own resources to practice healthy behaviors. To achieve this, we provide expertise in Social and Behavior Change (SBCC) and Knowledge Management (KM) to programs throughout the developing world."
