Health action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Green Seed Radio Hour

In February 2007, the United-States-based Green Building Exchange launched a weekly radio programme called "The Green Seed Radio Hour". Airing for one hour on Saturday afternoons in the state of California (USA), this show focuses on the green building industry as part of an effort to share information on sustainable building practices.
Communication Strategies

Broadcast every Saturday morning from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Pacific Standard Time on the radio station KTRB AM 860 in the San Francisco Bay Area, Green Seed Radio offers a round-table format designed to enable everyone - from homeowners to business professionals - to learn and share information, insights, and the latest news and discoveries in "green" building and living. The show features interviews with prominent people in the green building industry along with current news events relating to environmentally sustainable building practices. Green building vendors are among those participating in the broadcasts.

This initiative relies on the commitment of a commercial organisation to both educate the public and facilitate communication within its industry. Green Building Exchange indicates that it "is in a unique position to produce this program because we are constantly in communication with hundreds of green building leaders and professionals. The green building movement needs a forum for the public to learn more about green building products and services, as well as an information channel for green building professionals." Thus, while exhibitors may use the radio programme as a market resource, for educational purposes, or for simple entertainment, members of the public are also encouraged to learn about this industry through the broadcasts.

In an effort to bring the show to a broader audience, Green Building Exchange developed a website featuring archived podcasts of the radio programmes and related information and dialogue.

Sustainable Development, Environment.

Key Points

Green Building Exchange, Inc. provides information to the public regarding sustainable building practices, as well fosters connections between green building professionals. The exhibition facility itself is meant to be an educational and commerce marketplace, where architects, builders, subcontractors, and designers can use meeting rooms, collaborate on projects, and provide classes and training seminars for free.

According to the company website, "green building" consists of the use of environmentally sensitive design principles, materials, construction, and low- to no-maintenance techniques for buildings. A building can be considered sustainable as it approaches the goal of having zero negative impact - or even a positive impact - on its environment. Green Building Exchange maintains that this type of building is healthier, both for the structure's occupants and for the greater environment: "By reducing or eliminating many of the unhealthy substances commonly used to build structures (toxic paints, glues, caulking, etc.) and enhancing the use of natural light and fresh air, residents will experience improved health and quality of life. By emphasizing the use of renewable materials and reducing inefficiency and waste, the greater environment benefits, improving the health of all."
