Health action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

HaitiVOICES

This communication initiative was launched in the aftermath of the magnitude 7.0 earthquake that hit Haiti on January 12 2010. HaitiVOICES is a voluntary project administered by public health practitioners, physicians, and humanitarian responders to facilitate the collection and dissemination of information pertinent to humanitarian response and logistics in Haiti from January 18 2010 onwards. Accessible to all seeking data, the portal's open platform is designed to provide a user-friendly place to post information on emergency needs as well as to share data needed for crisis responders and volunteers to plan aid and intervention.
Communication Strategies

An interactive website was set up in days following this devastating disaster to encourage all response agencies in Haiti - whether local or international - to post current and anticipated activities and needs. All collected data are reported on the site in real time. Reflecting the United Nations (UN)'s cluster approach and 3W ("Who is Doing What Where") format, data are categorised by geographic location, cluster, and description of current and proposed activities and gaps. HaitiVOICES does not create redundancy and works in collaboration with other groups in Haiti to disseminate current and anticipated sectoral needs and contact information, and a means to augment existing data to facilitate information sharing and strategic collaboration, post-catastrophe.
