Health action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Author: Petru Botnaru, August 29 2013        Petru Botnaru posted a video (the first video below) on YouTube in 2010 called Together, and he included this text for English speakers:
... In 2003, in the Vorniceni village, Republic of Moldova, an exceptional situation has been declared, due to the fact that at the "Ion Inculet" lyceum 75 cases of Hepatitis A were identified. This motivated the first step of solving the problem - creating The Moldovan Network of Rural Volunteering Centers for Water (MNRVCW), which was done in 2003 - with main activities including the 7th European Youth Water Parliament; the Project "Democratization of Dniester River Governance" (2008-2010), which was supported by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and realized by Eco-TIRAS in partnership with WECF - Women of Europe for Common Future, and had as a goal to improve the management of 4 Dniester tributaries. The MNRVCW made an important contribution to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals [MDGs] - in all of which water plays a crucial role. The MNRVCW mission aims at expanding its activities including other villages, countries on local, regional, national, European, and international levels....

In 2013, Petru followed with a video (the next video below) on YouTube called Sunny Day Terra 1530! And he submitted this update on Vorniceni village's citizen action for the environment:

Forests provide a lot of diverse benefits to societies. Besides the fact that wood processing and forest products provide significant contributions to the development of national economies, forests play a major role in maintaining the natural ecological balance. They contribute to creating a microclimate that reduces the effects of environmentally harmful factors....

Goal - The forestation of the 4.65 ha area is from 2013-2014.
Objectives:

  1. Preparation of the Vorniceni village citizenry, over 5,000 people, to make decisions related to environmental problems by involving them in volunteer activities such as the installation of a metallic fence surrounding the square as well as setting up an information panel, dustbins, benches, sidewalks and lamps throughout the plot;
  2. Providing knowledge about Vorniceni village by distributing the "Adevarul" publication ("The Truth");
  3. Posting short videos on YouTube; and
  4. Holding international conferences with partners to promote similar activities.
