Health action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Rehabilitating the Infected

The Rockwell Foundation, in partnership with Global Hope Realization Movement (based in South East Nigeria), have organised an AIDS awareness programme called Rehabilitating the Infected. The programme will take place from March 31 to April 6, 2003. The purpose of the campaign is to disseminate information already being provided through the "Virus Campaign" in Nigeria and throughout Africa, and to provide a basis for efforts to better the lives of Africans who are infected with HIV/AIDS.
Communication Strategies

This programme, which focusses on providing information, will be based on cooperation with other international anti-HIV/AIDS campaigners. A team consisting of local and international representatives and volunteers have worked to develop the programme.

The programme will be conducted in markets, hospitals, motor parks, and hotels in five states in the sub-region. Preventive materials and educational films (in local languages) will be presented; the slogan "Flee HIV/AIDS" will be printed on advertisements and in books; and lectures and recreational events will be conducted. Efforts will also be undertaken to provide concrete aid, in the form of drugs, clothing, food, and payment of hospital bills.

Development Issues

HIV/AIDS.

Key Points

According to organisers, AIDS first appeared in June 1981. In this time, it is estimated that over 36 million people have been infected and another 22 million have died. This is despite the use of antiretroviral drug therapy, particularly in the wealthier nations.
