Health action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Streevani - India

A non-governmental organisation working since 1982 for women's empowerment. Streevani's main focus is to stimulate a wider and deeper awareness of women's issues. They work in rural areas as well as city slums on issues like literacy, health and de-addiction.
Communication Strategies

Some projects include women's governance, self help groups (SHGs), gender sensitisation, reproductive health, legal health, networking and documentation. There are 35 SHGs functioning under the supervision of Streevani and each group comprises 15-20 women. Six of these groups are made up of women from below the poverty line (BPL). They meet regularly and Streevani has helped them generate income by getting loans for projects like goat rearing, chalk-making, or selling flowers and vegetables.Streevani has also organised training programmes in the villages of Manjari Khurd, Avhalwadi, Bivari and Wadegaon, in order to create better leadership qualities among women. This was a result of their study of the Panchayati Raj in rural areas, which showed that although women may be put up as candidates for reserved seats, their presence was just token and their participation ended there. In their library, they stock books on women's issues, like violence, rape, prostitution, divorce and work environment, published by Streevani itself. They also produce films relating to women's problems. They hold legal literacy workshops for college girls, slum women and rural women.
Development Issues

Women, rights, family planning, reproductive health, economic development.
Key Points

Streevani deals with core issues affecting women like `bride burning and dowry deaths. One of Streevani's books, "Mythakvani," has won a national award.
