Health action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Mama Cash Grants

18 comments

Mama Cash supports projects from women's groups and women's organisations all over the world. The fund seeks:

  • projects that are focused on groups of women who are relegated to a marginal position within a certain context, for example: girls, women of colour, migrant and refugee women, HIV/AIDS-infected women, indigenous women, sex workers, lesbians, and women with a disability;
  • projects with bold, innovative strategies, responsive to changing circumstances, ready to take advantage of strategic opportunities, and prepared to share the risks inherent in the work of resisting and transforming oppressive structures and systems; and
  • innovative feminist and women's rights organisations, networks, and funds led by and for women and girls.

Applications from The Netherlands and Europe, as well as the Global South (Asia and the Middle East, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean) and the former Soviet Union, can be submitted throughout the entire year. Applications must be completed in Dutch, English, French, or Spanish. Mama Cash will only assess applications that meet her criteria and are properly completed.

Mama Cash mainly funds organisations and networks with annual operating budgets under 200,000 euros.

We are women in different subsectors of Agriculture. We don't have a formal license but Chamber of commerce has started to be our umbrella to have a sort of association where in the long run to secure individual licenses. Anyway due to luck of technical training and exposure to dairy farms, hoticulture, food processing like peanut butter, cheese etc, poultry farming, flower planting and arrangements, fattening, beekeeping, etc we reamained behind and we need your assistance in these aspects. Would you please give us a hint on how to write the application so that we get fund if you find us to be eligible. Look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

Women in Africa are highly marginalised. The lack the neccessary tools such as capacity building trainings to enable them have knowledge that can assist them to stand on their own. With your continued asssistance, i hope a barren tree of hope will one day bear nice and admirable fruits. Thank you so much for what ihave read though i have come come across any women group in Zambia that has been funded by your organization so that i could see how they are doing your grant and has it has changed their way of life. However, continue with your good and recommendable job. Lydia Banda, Chipata, Zambia.

I have been invited to a Conference in Bangkok by Tomorrow People Organization. The theme is Poverty and Social Protection. I am a women Leader in the village. This conference will help me with the knowledge of the key poverty and social issues and social protection concepts and systems through interactive learning to develop my own ideas and provide me with necessary training which i will be able to implement in my own village because it is the women who are in position to fight poverty. Can i apply for a travel grant?

Dear Mama!

You may not be aware of how you hava changed a whole community here in Kenya. In 2002 you accepted our request application to help us construct a women meeting centre in Kager village Homa Bay district in Western Kenya. We built a room which quickly attracted the attention of the community. We did not know that that would be the begining of a life chaning point for this community.

Today this project has spilled over to expand to a full primary school helping 200 children with over 50% being orphans, we have started an orphanage currently helping 80 children, we have a community clinic that has save lives of hundreds of people and today and ICT centre connecting the village and the outside world. All these we achieved because people saw the first success with our centre. We owe it all to Mama Cash.

Please feel free to visit us and see what your first seed did to us.
