Health action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Avian Influenza Hotline - Facilitator's Training Manual and Training of Trainers Module: Information and Skills

SummaryText
Developed for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Avian Influenza Program by the Academy for Educational Development (AED), this Avian Influenza Hotline Facilitator's Training Manual and Training of Trainers Module explores how to train operators to share information about avian influenza (AI) for hotline callers. The training has two parts: one part focuses on specific information about avian flu, as well as most frequently asked questions. Part two of the training deals with interpersonal communication skills needed by hotline operators during telephone calls. This manual prepares trainers to administer the workshop contained in the Operator's Training Manual.

This facilitator and trainer manual provides background and organisation for the facilitator and/or trainers of this workshop, including scheduling, budgeting, trainer and participant selection, and logistics. Each workshop session is outlined with instructions for the trainer in running the session, along with its objectives, materials, participant expectations, logistics, factual information, skill-based information, and pre- and post-testing. A second section of the manual offers a "Training of Trainers" module on adult learning, including the experiential learning cycle, presenter- versus learner-centred education, the progression of learning, guidelines for constructive feedback, and an observer checklist.
