Health action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

HIVResNet: Global HIV Drug Resistance Network - Red Mundial sobre Farmacorresistencia del VIH

The World Health Organization’s (WHO) Global HIV Drug Resistance Network (HIVResNet) is made up of a network of countries and affiliated institutions that apply the WHO HIV drug resistance strategy, as well as a network of accredited laboratories that do HIV testing with a guarantee of quality. The latter helps to facilitate vigilance and monitoring of HIV drug resistance in those countries.

The purpose of this initiative is to prolong and optimise the quality of life of people living with HIV by supporting the optimal functioning of the antiretroviral treatment programmes, by maintaining the practical efficacy of the first- and second-line conventional antiretroviral guidelines that are used in developing countries and by enabling reduction in HIV transmission.

Communication Strategies

As part of its objectives, the network performs evaluations and supplies national and international policy makers with information through an easy-to-access rapid information network. The network also establishes links between institutions and programmes that want to provide access to antiretroviral medications in developing countries.

Other specific objectives of this initiative are related to: drafting protocols and collecting information, fostering national and sub-regional vigilance capacity in countries that offer access to antiretroviral treatment programmes; supporting the transfer of technology and methodologies to analyse drug resistance in developing countries; and fostering the teaching of strategies to reduce HIV drug resistance.

Development Issues

Health, HIV/AIDS.

Key Points

Drug resistance, one of the WHO´s priority issues, is produced when microorganisms that produce the infection undergo changes that stop the effectiveness of the medicines being used. In 2008, with Network support, the WHO drafted a global strategy to reduce HIV drug resistance to a minimum. This strategy includes generic protocols and informative technical documents.

Partners

Organización Mundial de la Salud, Sociedad Internacional del SIDA.
