Through a programme involving training, rewards & community support, alternative roles are found for the ageing segment of society in Hong Kong & China.

Awareness of a growing ageing population displaced from their traditional roles of helping in the multigenerational household, stimulated interpersonal communication & community participation to integrate elders into the new urban society. In addition, Hong Kong created a reward system to show appreciation & respect for those who chose to volunteer their time.

Key Points
With many families in rural China moving into the city, there exists an opportunity for elderly community members to find employment on the small plots of land left behind. In cities, elderly people are found teaching calligraphy, literacy classes & music. In addition, they are using their skills & experience to train others in agriculture & engineering. "In large cities it is estimated that up to 30% of older people are actively involved in organized community work". As in western culture, many women have returned to the workforce creating opportunites for the elderly to take over the household duties & help with the family. In Hong Kong a reward system was established for elderly volunteers to show appreciation & respect. Called a Life Enrichment Award, there are gold, silver & bronze medals & a diamond Elderly Volunteer Award depending on the hours & type of volunteer service. "Rewards cover action from home care to skills training to aid for disaster victims".
