City-AIDS Project (UNAIDS/UNITAR) - Global

The partnership will be designed in anticipation of a World Conference on HIV/AIDS Competency of Cities and Local Authorities at the end of 2002. The first step of the project will involve identifying which cities or local authorities are at the forefront of work that addresses HIV/AIDS at the local level. For this purpose, a working paper entitled "City-Aids: Streamlining HIV/AIDS Issues into the Development Agenda of Cities" is available on request (see contact information, below). Local practitioners are encouraged to comment on this paper, and to provide further information about their own HIV/AIDS-related efforts to the end of drafting guidelines on 'AIDS-Competent Cities and Local Authorities'. The information being sought includes a review of local HIV/AIDS prevention and care initiatives (including ownership of the problem and solution, needs expressed, creation of a supportive environment, nature of local partnerships, and means of sharing experiences with those from other cities), competencies developed, lessons learned, best practices, and related materials produced. Guidelines will be gleaned from this information.

The City-AIDS project is planning to make available, in the future, a database on the web on these initiatives and best practices by cities and local authorities (who would have the capacity to directly expand the database themselves).
