Health action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Summary

This article details the discussion that took place in June 2007, at a roundtable that was organised by the Citizens committee to resist bird flu in Bangladesh. The roundtable focused on the need for direct measures and a continuous monitoring system to fight the spread of avian flu in Bangladesh.

According to Professor Ahmed Kamal, the acting convener of the committee, the Bangladesh government did not place enough emphasis or importance on bird flu when the virus was first detected in the country. "We have to take adequate preparation immediately for the sake of poultry industry and public health," he said.

Prof Anu Muhammad, member-secretary of the committee, spoke of the important role the media can play in helping to fight bird flu. He also spoke about the need for government ministries and members of the poultry industry to work together to combat avian influenza.
