Health action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText
The Framework Convention Alliance (FCA) has produced this fact sheet designed for policymakers, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), journalists and others interested in tobacco. This is one of a series of tobacco-related fact sheets that provide summaries of current research, responses to common industry arguments, give guidance on the relevant sections of the global tobacco treaty (the FCTC) and provide sources for more information.

The Warning Labels fact sheet contains 3 pages of information and statistics on how to create effective warning labels for cigarette packages and tobacco-industry marketing materials. Information includes:
  • How to implement the FCTC, which states that warning messages should cover 50% of a packages display surface
  • What makes an effective warning label, including using size, imagery and rotation of messages
  • Advice for using images to reach children and smokers, who are exposed to the messages frequently
  • Advice on sizing of messages, suggesting that 80% of the package front contain warning messages
  • Industry arguments and rebuttals, with advice on how to handle industry arguments against warning labels
