Health action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText

This website offers curriculum components and tools for trainers to design, implement, and evaluate family planning and reproductive health (FP/RH) training. The TRP provides organisations with what are meant to be user-friendly resources and materials for FP and RH trainers, supervisors, and programme managers. The materials are appropriate for pre-service and in-service training and applicable in both the public and private sectors. Free to download, its content can be customised to meet the needs of specific training audiences - e.g., the materials may be translated. The TRP will be updated regularly to both incorporate new materials and comply with the latest changes to technical guidance.

The TRP includes content in the following areas:

  • Guidance on how to design and implement training interventions
  • Guidance on how to use the TRP, including how to adapt the materials in the package
  • Modules to facilitate acquisition of core FP knowledge and skills
  • Modules on each contraceptive method for health care providers

Designed to reach a wide audience, including physicians, other clinical providers, and frontline health care workers, including community health workers (CHWs), each training module is organised into sections containing:

  • Illustrative session plan and training schedule
  • Facilitator's guide
  • Presentation slide sets (technical information slides have a pale green background; pictorial slides feature a pink header and are especially useful for trainees with lower literacy skills; and slides that focus on research study conclusions have a pale blue background)
  • Interactive group and self-study learning activities, games, and case studies
  • Job aids, learning guides, knowledge assessments, and skills evaluations
  • References

The following 8 steps are designed to help develop effective training using TRP materials:

  • Step 1: Assess performance needs
  • Step 2: Assess training needs
  • Step 3: Write your training goal and learning objectives
  • Step 4: Identify TRP modules related to the learning objectives
  • Step 5: Review and adapt TRP materials
  • Step 6: Create a training schedule
  • Step 7: Gather supplies and prepare to conduct training
  • Step 8: Pre-Test the Curriculum

This story, "Pathfinder International Uses TRP to Facilitate the Introduction of Jadelle in Afghanistan" provides an example of how the TRP Implant Module was used as a resource in a practical capacity.

The TRP was developed using evidence-based technical information from the following World Health Organization (WHO) publications: Family Planning: A Global Handbook for Providers; the latest WHO Medical Eligibility Criteria for Contraceptive Use; and Selected Practice Recommendations for Contraceptive Use. The development of the TRP has been by led by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), WHO, and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), with full participation from technical and training experts representing multiple agencies and organisations including the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), International Planned Parenthood Foundation (IPPF), and USAID implementing partners EngenderHealth, FHI 360, the Institute for Reproductive Health, IntraHealth, Jhpiego, The Johns Hopkins University, Management Sciences for Health, and Pathfinder International.
