Health action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Key Points
HelpAge India works for the welfare of ageing community members & has been conducting the 'Adopt-a-Gran' programme since 1978. HelpAge identifies persons above 60 years who are in need of assistance, "adopts" them & provides members with food, clothing, medical care, bedding, articles of personal use and pocket money. A spokesperson for HelpAge India stated that "one has to shell out only Rs 300-400 per month to adopt a gran. By doing so, one needn't take that person home but merely has to pay the amount to help meet the person's basic financial & medical needs". In addition to Bangalore, HelpAge, which funds this programme, had secured 14 NGOs and charitable trusts in Mysore, Mangalore, Babai and Belgaum. To date, over 17,000 aged persons from all over the State have been "adopted". Bhaswati M. Sarkar, writer for the Economic Times, Calcutta states: "HelpAge is a messiah of hope for the elderly. It gives them a new direction in the dusk of life." For information on another 'adoption' programme, please link to "Re-Integration of Families - Greece".
