Health action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Income Generation Programmes - HelpAge India

Over 300 income generation projects implemented throughout India restore a sense of dignity, independence & well-being to an ageing population.
Communication Strategies
HelpAge India goes out into the community and educates the elderly population on income-generating projects. Community action knits generations together, strengthening the value system & giving elderly members a healthy sense of purpose.
Development Issues
Ageing, Health, Economic Development, Population
Key Points
The 300+ programmes implemented by HelpAge India are small ventures which are easily managed by the elderly: Goat-rearing, envelope, candle and agarbatti making, and durrie-weaving, to name a few. HelpAge India has also established a system of micro-credit assisting those in need of capital to start a small enterprise i.e. buying a loom. Loans are returned at a low interest in small quantities to facilitate easy repayment. Money repaid is again invested in the project activity. The Income Generation Programmes help to preserve Indian culture, traditions and heritage. Keeping the elderly as contributing members of society, with a sense of dignity & financial independence, increases their status & strengthens the family system. According to HelpAge India, "Economic Independence = Security + Confidence + Health".
