Health action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText
The Solutions Site was created by Horizon International, in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme, the United Nations Development Programme, the United Nations Population Fund, the United Nations Childrens Fund (UNICEF), Horizon's colleagues at Harvard University and Yale University, and the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) of Canada. The purpose of the site is to provide a forum for the presentation of solutions to concerns in the areas of health, population, development, and the environment. Initiatives are gathered through a number of different means, including direct user submissions, the efforts of partner institutions, and Horizon's own research activities. Each case study is reviewed by one or more members of the Horizon Scientific Review Board prior to its publication. By presenting the case studies on the internet, the Solutions Site intends to provide the means to encourage replication of the initiatives presented, and to foster the development of new ones.

The site aims to benefit people throughout the world - from industrial leaders to micro-entrepreneurs, from agricultural experts to small scale farmers, from wildlife preservationists to marine ecologists, from family planning experts to public health workers, and from government decision-makers to educators. It attempts to provide carefully appraised answers to problems in the interconnected areas of the environment, health, population, and development, in the form of case-studies (peer-reviewed), articles, and exhibits.

This site is one of several Horizon International Web pages. The Horizon Television Programs site (see the related summary below) features links to programmes of the series "One Second Before Sunrise", covering the environment; health; and development, finding means to meet economic needs with least harm to our planet and advancing technological innovations for the betterment of the planet.

The Horizon Solutions Site for Kids of All Ages (see the related summary below) is an interactive, multimedia feature of the Solutions Site. Many of the entries on the Solutions Site are rewritten for the younger audience. In addition, Horizon is working to promote protection of coral reefs through the Magic Porthole project, a coral reef project that provides multimedia and multifaceted experiences, while providing education about the coral reef, its inhabitants, and the water environment.
