Health action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Salt Radio Campaign - Global

UNICEF has launched a series of two 30-second and one 60-second public service announcements (PSAs) to highlight the problem of iodine deficiency, which threatens the growth and mental development of children worldwide. The solution, iodising the salt that families consume, is simple and inexpensive.
Communication Strategies
UNICEF radio spots about iodine deficiency and the need to use iodised salt are available in English, French, and Spanish to broadcasters for free and unrestricted use. In these PSAs, entitled "Please pass the iodized salt", listeners hear the sounds of a family at mealtime, with a voiceover describing the benefits of iodised salt.
Development Issues
Children, Health, Nutrition.
Key Points
Lack of iodine, an essential micronutrient, threatens the learning ability of millions of children around the world. In 1990, 20% of people in the developing world had access to iodised salt. Today, thanks to a partnership between governments, international agencies, NGOs, and the salt industry, approximately 70% of households use iodised salt. Despite this success, there are still many countries where less than half the population uses iodised salt. Not only must salt producers and governments ensure that all salt is iodised, but people must also understand why they should use it.

All PSA tracks are in MP3 format and are suitable for broadcast. Click here to preview of one or both tracks. Direct download is also possible. The radio PSAs, with scripts, are also available on CD in English, French, and Spanish (see below).
