Health action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Summary

In March 2007, experts and executives from companies related to poultry farming gathered in Ho Chi Minh City to discuss the role of the private sector in the fight against avian influenza. According to the article, experts at the meeting praised the private sector’s contribution in spreading the message about avian flu prevention among poultry farmers.

According to the Chair of the Viet Nam Poultry Association, Tran Cong Xuan, private companies have played an important role in avian flu prevention through supporting vaccination campaigns, conducting bird flu workshops and seminars, distributing leaflets and materials and by teaching poultry farmers, households and staff at poultry farms how to prevent infection. Xuan spoke of the importance of keeping poultry farmers informed of up-to-date information about bird flu and how to prevent it. He also stressed the need for close cooperation between authorised agencies and private companies to help to ensure that avian flu preventative measures become part of a company’s sales and marketing activities.
